Rumours and gossip are spread on the grapevine but why 'the grapevine'? The term originated in the USA and comes from the telegraph system invented in the 19th century by Samuel Morse.
How did AA Grapevine get its name?
An entire page with the heading, "Mail Call for All AAs in the Armed Forces," was devoted to letters from these members, who began calling the Grapevine their "meeting in print." The title stuck, and today the Grapevine and La Viña carry it on their covers.

This painting was created by Robert M for the December 1955 Grapevine (an Alcoholics Anonymous publication). I commented on the painting and informed my new friend that I was sober 35 years though I don't go to meetings anymore.
