What is Becoming ultra?

Becoming Ultra is a website, podcast and community for aspiring ultra runners. Resources, inspiration, storytelling and coaching services to help you train for and complete an ultramarathon!

How long does it take to become an ultra?

When choosing your first ultramarathon, we recommend a 50k. It's a great distance, a very cool challenge and it's a great starting race. With the right training plan and preparation, you can be ready to run your first 50k within 3-4 months.

How can I prepare for ultra?

Do ultra runners lift weights?

Most runners should spend time lifting in this range, as heavy lifting benefits sprinters and ultra-distance runners alike.

What do ultra marathoners eat?

Usually, organisers will also offer foods like mashed potatoes, bananas or peanut butter sandwiches at refuelling points during the ultra-races. Make sure you eat enough to sustain you the next 15 kilometers or so. You can also have energy drinks like Red Bull for a quick burst of energy.

When should I taper for 100K?

100K UltraMarathon Taper Plan Typically, I take a ten to fourteen day taper before a race. But for a race over 50 miles, I think there are some much needed adjustments. For a 100K race, taking a longer but more gradual approach can have a few benefits.

Is a 4 week taper too long?

Research has shown that 4-weeks may be too long of a marathon taper for many runners. Runners who taper too long lose the muscle tension or “pop” in their legs and end up feeling stale on race day.
