Becky Isbell joins Dr. Misner on the podcast this week to talk about the three places you need to build relationships: at home, at work, and in your community. Relationships are one of BNI’s core values, and it’s important not to take them for granted.

What should your weekly presentation be?

Your weekly presentation should be laser-specific and focus on a different product or service every week. An elevator pitch needs to tell people who you are and what you do in more general terms. If you’re doing an elevator pitch in your weekly presentation, you’re wasting your time. Here are seven tips to help you create an effective elevator ...

Should a weekly presentation be laser specific?

The weekly presentation should be laser specific every and you should talk about a different product or a different service. That is different than a elevator pitch which is going to be more general and it tells people who you are and what you do in general terms. If you do a basic elevator pitch every week in BNI you are wasting your time.

Can you use elevator pitch in BNI?

Maybe, you use your elevator pitch in BNI on a visitors day. So it’s a little more general but doing an elevator pitch week in and week out, where it’s in general terms what you do, is not what you want to do in a BNI meeting. Your elevator pitch is different from your weekly presentation.

Synopsis

A BNI member once told his BNI director that he wasn’t going to renew his membership because he wasn’t getting enough business. The director was surprised, because he had attended this chapter’s meetings and seen people give this members referrals. “Yeah,” the member said, “But it hasn’t turned into business, so I’m not renewing.”

Extending Your Eyes and Ears

There are people all around us who are looking to grow their businesses. (Listen to Episode 404 to hear more about this.)

Go to Other Networking Events

Chamber of commerce meetings and trade shows are especially good because everyone there is already looking for business.

Social Media: Stack Day on a Platter

Join neighborhood groups on Facebook and LinkedIn and ask for recommendations for professions your BNI chapter needs. Send private messages to each of the people who were recommended and invite them to come to the BNI meeting on the same day. Your chapter gets its choice of new members, and you can send the others to neighboring BNI chapters.

Before I Hang Up

Finish every conversation by asking “Can you recommend a great __________ (profession the chapter is looking for)”? If they say yes, call that person and say “So and so highly recommended you. Would you be my guest at a business meeting? I’d like to introduce you to some local people.”

Follow Up

Not everyone is ready to join right away, but they might still be interested. Follow up with every visitor.
