What are command zones?

The Command zone is a zone used for special objects which affect the game like permanents do, but are not actually permanents. This includes commanders, emblems, planes, phenomena and schemes.

Is the command zone scripted?

First off, we don't script any of the gameplay. The interviews are obviously recorded after the game and, while not scripted, we do try to tocus towards whatever storylines emerged while we were playing. But honestly - how would you even script a full game of four people playing Commander?

Josh Lee Kwai is a former movie trailer editor with over 15 years of experience in the entertainment industry. He has worked at Disney and Universal (among others) on properties like Star Wars, The Fast & Furious, The Avengers, and many more.

Do commander effects work in command zone?

While in the command zone, your commander's abilities won't affect the game unless those abilities specifically say they do. You may cast your commander from the command zone. Each time you do, it costs 2 more to cast for each time you've previously cast it from the command zone during the game.

Can you permanently exile a Commander?

Players have access to their commander every game, and if they die or are exiled, they can instead place them back into the command zone. Recasting them takes two extra mana per revival, but their potential resurrections make them almost impossible to permanently eliminate.

Does betray steal Commander?

This rules change also fixed some weirder interactions as well. It That Betrays used to steal sacrificed creatures out of the command zone. Banishing Light leaving the battlefield would return commanders targeted by it from the command zone to the battlefield.

Can Banisher priest exile a Commander?

Nothing. The exiled creature no longer exists, so there's nothing to do. Banisher Priest doesn't look for an "exiled creature" (like a Fiend Hunter would). It can track the Commander through the zone change and return it.
