A DM is nothing without their players. And a D&D podcast without players is just a person monologuing into a microphone. Whenever my players attempt something I wasn't expecting, or something very unorthodox, I let the table's reaction to the roll decide if it was high enough. Optimism and high spirits gets a pass, a low roll with lots of sighs is a fail.
