Nassar was born on August 16, 1963, in Farmington Hills, Michigan, to Fred Nassar (1925–2000) and Mary Nassar (1924–2019). He began working as a student athletic trainer for the women's gymnastics team at North Farmington High School at age 15 in 1978 on the recommendation of his older brother Mike, who was an athletic trainer at the school.
