Why do so many people leave their faith?

So many of these stories of people leaving their faith, if you dig down deep enough into them, the break from their faith actually happened in the context of a relationship. They felt maybe alienated in their youth group, or they were abused by a spiritual authority, or they have relational issues with their parents.

Why does my pastor say he's falling away from faith?

There's a lot of consternation when your pastor says he's “falling away” from faith because it's an implicit threat to your own faith. I think especially when it's someone you admired, that you learned from, that you looked up to, has such a dramatic shift away from faith, you kind of wonder about yourself.

What happened to Chris Harris’s faith?

Last week, Harris published another Instagram post, this time about the state of his faith:I have undergone a massive shift in regard to my faith in Jesus. The popular phrase for this is “deconstruction,” the biblical phrase is “falling away.” By all the measurements that I have for defining a Christian, I am not a Christian.

Finding the way forwards

If you have realized the many problems with Christianity or are just having doubts then you are not alone. Christianity is a complex religion made up of many parts which don’t all necessarily fit together.

Options going forwards

Atheism isn’t the only outcome when leaving Christianity. For some atheism is the initial first step when they question everything they have been taught. Others progress through more and more liberal forms of Christianity until they find one that fits, often moving again a bit later.

Re-building the wall

But leaving is only half the picture. As doctrines fall away they are not necessarily replaced with nothing. A doctrine often falls away when something better has been found – either non-spiritual or spiritual in nature – that makes more sense or better matches spiritual or physical reality.
