A Bar Fight Walks into the Justice Center

A young woman at a bar is slapped on the butt. So why’s she the one in jail?

Pleas Baby Pleas

Don’t tell the judges, but the prosecutors have the most power in the building.

The Snowball Effect

If you listen closely to the trash-talking, you start to get the message.

Patapsco State Park

If we continue following Jay’s original timeline, this is where he and Jay smoked weed after abandoning Hae’s car. Jay said that he remembered seeing the sunset, which would have happened at 5.05pm, before taking Adnan back to school for track practice.

The Best Buy parking lot

According to the prosecution, this is where Adnan killed Hae. According to Jay, who was the prosecution’s key witness, Adnan called him from a payphone in this parking lot, said he had killed Hae, and that Jay should come pick him up. Jay said that when he arrived here, Adnan showed him Hae’s body in the trunk.

The Storyville public library

On the edge of the Woodlawn High School campus, about seventy yards or so from the school’s entrance, is where Adnan says he went after school finished at 2.15pm. According to the state’s case, Hae was killed within 21 minutes of 2.15pm – these are the 21 minutes Koenig said she had spent the last year trying to figure out.

Leakin Park

This is where, on February 9, a man known as “Mr S” came across Hae’s body, 127 feet back from the road, buried in a shallow grave behind a fallen tree. According to Jay’s testimony at the time, he and Adnan retrieved Hae’s body from her car and dug the grave together using shovels Jay collected from his house.

Cell phone tower

Data was used by the prosecution at Adnan’s trial to try to corroborate Jay’s testimony. Other than Jay – whose story was nothing if not changeable – the records were the only evidence. But trying to locate someone based on which cell phone tower was pinged is an inexact science, and the data is open to multiple interpretations.

Woodlawn High School

This is the school Hae Min Lee attended with Adnan; they began dating after their Junior Prom, in 1998. They broke up just before Christmas, which was the backbone of the motive the state ascribed to Adnan for her murder.

Inside the library

According to Adnan, he waited in the library until track practice – though he often seems unsure when speaking to Koenig. One girl, Asia McClain, thought she remembered speaking to Adnan in the library; she even wrote him letters after he was sent to prison saying she had spoken to him there.

The Alibi

A potential alibi surfaces … and then disappears again, at the worst possible time for Adnan’s case.

The Breakup

Friends say Adnan was sad when Hae dumped him, but not crazy sad - normal sad. The prosecutors say he was rage-filled and vengeful. Which is it?

Leakin Park

Three weeks after Hae goes missing, a man discovers her body in the middle of a city forest. But his story is strange and his past is even stranger. Did he really just stumble on her by accident?

Inconsistencies

The detectives get a lead that opens the case up for them. They bring Jay in for questioning and he tells them the story of January 13th. But then, a few weeks later, his story changes.

Route Talk

Adnan once issued a challenge to Sarah: Recreate the state’s timeline of the murder by driving from Woodlawn High School to Best Buy in 21 minutes. It can’t be done, he said. So, we tried.

The Case Against Adnan Syed

Sarah weighs all the other circumstantial evidence prosecutors had against Adnan, including curious behavior, a dramatic note, and an unexplained mid-afternoon phone call.

The Opposite of the Prosecution

Sarah learned about another case with striking similarities to Adnan’s: a key witness, cell records, young people, drugs. So she called up the defense attorney on that case looking for insight, and got much more than she bargained for.
