Who is “the Watcher”?

The author then signed as “The Watcher,” in a cursive font. After receiving the letter, the Broaddus family reached out to the previous owners of the house, a couple named John and Andrea Woods.

Who is the Watcher in the Outsiders?

The Watcher is Michael Langford, a neighbor of the Broaddus family. This theory was brought forth by Derek Broaddus, who suspected him after he and the Broadduses attended a neighborhood barbecue after the arrival of the first letter.

Was “the Watcher” note a load of crap?

One of my favorite articles about the case back when it was breaking news came from Lauren Evans of The Gothamist. Bill Schaffer, whose family had lived in the house from 1955 to 1963, had contacted Evans to say “The Watcher” note was a load of crap. His family had never received any kind of creepy notes like that.

Who is the Watcher in Westfield village?

So far, there have been no reports of the new owners receiving letters from The Watcher. The Watcher is an anonymous man referred to as “The Gamer.” While Westfield Police were surveilling the house one night, around 11 p.m., a car stopped in front of the house.

Taking a Break

On the evening of June 2, 2014, around 10 pm Derek had taken a break from painting and had gone to retrieve the mail and found a white, card-shaped envelope addressed to “The New Owner”, but had no return address.

The Letter

Allow me to welcome you to the neighborhood. How did you end up here? Did 657 Boulevard call to you with its force within?

Derek Calls Police

Derek ran back inside turning off all the lights so no one could see in.

They Reach Out to Previous Owners

Derek and Maria decided to reach out via email to the previous owners, The Woods, asking if they had any idea who The Watcher could be or why The Watcher had written:

More Letters

On or about June 18th another letter was received and a month later on July 18th a 3rd letter was mailed in the same card-shaped envelope with thick black lettering, but the writer had misspelled the Broaddus’s last name.

The Letter Continues

All of the windows and doors in 657 Boulevard allow me to watch you and track you as you move through the house. Who am I? I am the Watcher and have been in control of 657 Boulevard for the better part of two decades now. The Woods family turned it over to you. It was their time to move one and kindly sold it when I asked them to.

What evidence did the police use to prove Michael's sister was the watcher?

Another piece of evidence casting doubt on the theory was the discovery of DNA on one of the letters. With the DNA belonging to a woman, the police considered that Michael’s sister, Abby, may have been the Watcher, and the letter’s DNA was compared with DNA from a water bottle that Abby had used. It was not a match.

Where is the Broaddus family house?

written by larrymlease February 20, 2021. In June 2014, Maria and Derek Broaddus were getting ready to move into 657 Boulevard in Westfield, New Jersey, with their three children. 657 Boulevard was considered the Broadduses’ dream home due to its proximity to Maria’s childhood home, spacious layout, and location in the “30th Safest City in ...

The History of the Westfield Watcher House

The story of the Westfield Watcher went viral worldwide back in 2015. It all started after Derek and Maria Broaddus bought the New Jersey Dutch colonial in 2014.

Suspicious Circumstances

Corbin felt there were a lot of weird things about Broaddus’s story —weird beyond a Watcher supposedly stalking the house. Weird as in timing issues and actions that didn’t add up.

Does the Great Recession play a part in the Watcher house?

2004 to 2007 was a hot housing market just about everywhere. Tons of people were flipping houses. That could help explain the Broaddus family’s 10 mortgages. If their Scotch Plains house appreciated, perhaps they kept refinancing or taking out mortgages to take advantage of great low-interest rates.

The Watcher House Neighbors

In a 2018 article, The Cut presented the most thorough examination of the case of the “Haunting of 657 Boulevard” up to that time. It included more excerpts from the creepy “Watcher” letters than had ever been previously released.

Surveillance of the Watcher House

Derek Broaddus put up cameras and would sit up in the dark watching for anyone approaching his house.

Watcher House Suspects

Derek and Maria Broaddus remained convinced it was their next-door neighbors, the Langfords. Investigators, however, wanted to consider other neighbors, like two child sex offenders who lived within a few blocks.

Another Family Receives A Watcher Letter

There was one other family who later said they had also received a weird note around the same time the Broadduses received their first one. Except, they just threw theirs out.
