Who was Isadore Banks?

In the middle of the last century, in a small town called Marion on the Arkansas Delta, lived a man named Isadore Banks. “ [He was] a good man, a big tall man, a strong man, and he was a very kind man,” recalls one of the town’s elderly residents. Banks owned 1,000 acres of farmland, plus a trucking business, a café and a grocery store, and was one of the richest men in the county. He was also African-American and, one night in 1954, he was lynched.

It’s worth noting that though Goodwin lived modestly, when his widow died in 1999 she left a bequest of $7m to her local Baptist church. Grandparents: Elias Banks, a white land-owner living in Rome Georgia, and an African American woman named Nancy Banks, who was formerly enslaved. They had a son, named John who was Isadore’s father. Elias Banks died in 1878. Parents: John Banks and Annie Butler. Annie was African American and believed to be part Native American (Cherokee).

Unfinished: Deep South was released on June 9, 2020, two weeks after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and was noted as relevant by the media.
