Is Dan a historian?

Dan has a special way to take the lessons of history and make them seem closer and dearer than I’ve ever heard or experienced.#N#While he is not an historian, as he is fond of telling his podcast audience, (His Hardcore History Podcast is second to none for good reasons) his exhaustive research and extensive quotes from a wide variety of sources bring history to life like no others have.#N#I highly recommend this book (and the long list of references he provides) to fans of history, dramatic non-fiction storytelling, and everyone from 15-115.#N#If any of my history classes had included this or his podcasts, even as supplementary material, I am confident that I would have gotten better grades and had a more personal understanding of history.#N#Five thousand stars!

Is Dan's delivery conversational?

Dan's delivery is less conversational, of course, because he's reading, but he does an excellent job of putting the information across and making it compelling. The scope of this book is more broad than a typical Hardcore History topic - and touches on many things covered in past podcasts, but in different ways.

What is Dan Carlin's style of storytelling?

“A master of storytelling, Dan Carlin uses vivid detail and intuitive empathy to imagine what it was like to live through the end of the world....Car lin’s engaging and accessible style invites us to ponder the rise and fall of civilizations and ask where we are headed. The end of the world is not merely a catastrophe that waits for us down the road; it is a ghost that haunts the places we’ve already been.”

Is the end of the world a catastrophe?

The end of the world is not merely a catastrophe that waits for us down the road; it is a ghost that haunts the places we’ve already been.”. - Mike Duncan, New York Times bestselling author of The Storm Before the Storm.

What does the book The End Is Always Near mean?

The End Is Always Near posits that human civilization always either seems to be near extinction or actually more or less goes extinct from time to time. Carlin “writes” about the fall of the Assyrian Empire, the fall of the Roman Empire, and the Black Plague. But it takes a while getting there.

How long are Carlin episodes?

His episodes often run more than three hours. They’re discursive epics that bring history to life with sweeping drama. He certainly presents himself as a public intellectual, and he should probably be able to produce a book. Carlin is about something other than book publishing.

Who used narrative techniques to relate the absurd sweep of history?

In the recent past, or even present, popular historians like Barbara Tuchman or Robert Caro have used narrative techniques to relate the absurd sweep of history. But they rigorously sourced their work.
